Thus, the reason so many young men ran off to join the military to escape the constant routine and rule of their parents. Lorenzo however, did not go off to fight for these reasons, as he had already begun his own family when the American Civil War broke out, and he did not rush off to join the Southern cause right away.
However, thousands of young men and boys who had worked on farms as well as factories and shipyards did, and they found out quickly that the military was much harsher and even dangerous than life at home.
Today, on the Bennett Farm, students can walk the very ground where the Bennett family members lived and worked prior to one of the most significant events in American history coming in to their parlor. They will experience a unique opportunity to visit with a civilian of the 19 th century in rural North Carolina.
Included in this educational meeting, students will learn about daily life on a Piedmont North Carolina farm during the American Civil War period. The historical interpreter will show them the kitchenhouse and the aspects of preparing the three meals of the day; breakfast, dinner, and supper.
Students will also learn about the chores that most children and young adults assisted with around the farm, and then they will venture to the garden to learn about the vegetables and herbs planted to sustain the family on a daily basis. Students examine Civil War battles on two levels: the strategic doctrine as formed by the major commanders and tactical developments that affected the conduct of battle at a lower echelon of command.
Special emphasis is on the interplay between these levels in order to gain a comprehensive view of strategy and tactics in both armies from This course is a study of national, theater, and operational command structures of the Union and Confederacy, the leadership styles of key military leaders on both sides, and the evolution of command and control in the war. Major themes include the relationship between the commanders in chief and the generals who led the armies in the field, the relationships between the generals themselves, and the ways in which the relationships described above either served to facilitate or debilitate the causes those commanders served.

Of course they have a limited number of teachers, and so they're not going to teach or students at one time Children come to school for three hours at a time and leave, and then another class will come in.
The adults are being taught at night. They need to read and write as well. They need to understand Jeffersonian concepts of education. They need to understand labor contracts. They need to deal with white people more as equals. And to do that, they have to be literate.
And so the children first, the adults second, and then it binds the whole community into a thriving enterprise, actually. Ted Tunnell: [Marshall Twitchell] was very proud of the role he played in creating black schools. The [Louisiana state] constitution required one school per parish. Twitchell is actually going to create ten schools in Red River Parish. Now, he doesn't try to create desegregated schools. Nobody, indeed hardly anybody in the South, is able to do this. New Orleans has a few desegregated schools for a brief time during Reconstruction, but nobody makes it work in the rural parishes.
So Twitchell though, he does create black schools. He creates five schools for whites and five schools for blacks. He's very proud of this. When he first institutes this program, there are rumors that the black schools are going to be busted up, that white gangs are going to burn them down.
He puts out the word that if the black schools are busted up, he will stop paying the teachers in the white schools. It works. They let the black schools alone.
